Spiral Internet Celebrates 9th Anniversary

It was on May 1, 2006 when Nevada County Community Network (NCCN) turned over the reigns to Chip and myself. It was a technologically bumpy ride for the first few days as — unbeknown to us — the NCCN dial-up access numbers were shut off over that initial weekend before we could alert the customers about the new call in numbers. Then the phone answering system we inherited from NCCN, just up and died. Calls were literally coming in every minute from irate costumers. Talk about initiation by fire.

From day one, Chip and I knew that we had to bring much faster Internet service throughout western Nevada County. It took a while to find the best path to make that happen. There is no question that Google Fiber inspired us. On this Thursday, our application to become a “telephone utility” is on the agenda to be approved by the California Public Utilities Commission Board. This will provide us with the rights of way that utilities such as AT&T and PG&E have, so we can build our Gigabit 100% fiber optic network. And very soon, our Phase 1 California Advanced Services Fund grant application will also be approved.

By the time of Spiral’s 10th Anniversary, a good number of our Phase 1 customers will be enjoying the use of symmetrical Gigabit speeds on our new fiber optic network. To say that I’m getting excited would be an understatement.

If you haven’t already, watch our “It Starts With Light” video.

Congratulations on your 9th Anniversary John. We are so excited to FINALLY get “real” internet service out on Greenhorn Road!!Thanks for all the hard work.

  • Thanks Wendy. Can’t wait to turn it on at your home!

  • Nik

I live off Greenhorn, stuck with the ever abysmal AT&T U-Verse, and before that Hughesnet(don’t even get me started on them). Excited for the county to get some Internet speeds that aren’t terrible!

Hey, congratulations on 9 years of dedication to this area. I’ll never forget the GoogleBit rally in Nevada City, it was great seeing so many people who were passionate about getting quality internet.
I’m hyped for when I’ll have amazing internet access in Smartsville in the coming years. Thanks for everything!

This sounds both encouraging and exciting. Not just from a residential and consumer standpoint, but one of an overall grand vision to enhance Nevada County’s strategic footprint if you will. This type of infrastructure upgrade is exactly what fuels growth and investment. In turn, that investment can fuel prosperity for residents and visitors alike. Looking forward to getting high speed internet at home for sure, however, I think this transcends the end user experience and can really be a spark plug for the county. Great job guys!

kinda bummed it is topping half way down greenhorn, why not run all the way out to the end of the pavement while you are out there installing phase 1???????

  • Thanks for the comment Richard. When we mapped our projects areas, we had to select boundaries. If there is significant interest in extending our service further down Greenhorn, then we will absolutely consider doing it. Please encourage your neighbors to “map” themselves at http://www.spiral.com/fiber so we know there is significant interest. We are going to seriously consider all adjacent areas to the phase maps. If you would like to pick up cards to hand out to your neighbors, we have them in our office. Just note that you can’t place those cards in mailboxes. John.

  • Thanks for the kudos Brian. It looks as if all of our hard work is about to pay off. Stay tuned. John.

  • Thanks for the kudos Shawn. It has been a long road to getting our network built. Stay tuned, as it is about to pay off. John.

  • Thanks Nik. Make sure you “map” your location by going to http://www.spiral.com/fiber Thanks. John.

  • I am so excited. I would be happy to offer my studio to demo new gigabit to potential customers as I am in zone A next to 174. A demo is worth a thousand words!

  • Thanks David. Once we install your service, it would be fun to use your space to demo the incredible speed and reliability. … John
